The Sports Jacket

The British will say the “sports jacket” and the Americans will baptise it the “odd jacket”, referring to a garment that is worn outside the traditional context of a full suit. Traditionally, the suit is made up of a matching jacket, trousers and waistcoat, but the odd jacket stands out because it is made of a different fabric or colour to the trousers.

Historically, the odd sport coat gained popularity in the 19th century, when men began to experiment more in the world of fashion, mixing different pieces to express individuality. The sport coat can come in a variety of textures and patterns, from lightweight linen for warm climates to heavier wool for the cold, and can be worn on a variety of occasions, from casual events to more formal social gatherings.

One of the great advantages of the odd is its versatility, which makes it a match for almost everything. It can be combined with trousers of different cuts and materials, giving you a unique look every time you wear it. For example, a tweed jacket can be paired with jeans for a relaxed look or with classic trousers for a more formal setting.

Thus, the odd jacket is not just a garment, but also a symbol of creativity and flexibility in contemporary fashion and the panoply of fabrics and colours ranges from various tweeds, to corduroy, to the very new wool knit and will end in light, fresh fabrics where linen is king.

Nowadays, the term blazer has become common for any loose jacket and there are men who choose suit patterns such as the chalk stripe or the partridge eye and wear the suit jacket with sports trousers. It may seem trendy or even rebellious, but it’s a manifestation of uncultivated taste. One detail that makes all the difference is to choose a jacket and trousers that match in weight and shape and never mix a woollen gabardine fabric jacket with chinos, corduroy or jeans whose rusticity calls for fabrics with more body and solidity, otherwise they are two different halves of the same man.
